PIXTA Relaunches AI-Powered Short-Form Anime Platform Anipops

Japan-based stock media company PIXTA Inc. relaunched the short-form anime streaming platform Anipops on August 12, 2024. The company's CEO, Daisuke Komata, discussed the platform's AI-powered infrastructure and the innovations it aims to bring to the anime world in an interview with Anime Corner. This launch is seen as PIXTA's official entry into AI-powered anime content distribution.
PIXTA is a Japanese company founded in 2005, known primarily as a stock photo, video, and illustration platform. Anipops is the company's most ambitious step in the anime field. The platform aims to offer anime episodes that can be quickly and easily consumed on mobile devices in a short-form format. This format appeals especially to the new generation of viewers accustomed to short videos like TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
In the interview, Komata emphasized that Anipops places artificial intelligence technology at the center of content distribution. AI is used both to offer personalized recommendations to viewers and to accelerate the content production process. This approach aims to offer an alternative to the high-cost, time-consuming nature of traditional anime production. This could make it easier for independent creators to enter the anime world.
The anime industry has recently been both excited and cautious about artificial intelligence. While some studios use AI in their production processes, debates in the industry continue. Amid these discussions, Anipops positions AI not just as a tool but as a fundamental part of distribution. This moves the platform to a different point both technologically and in terms of content.
In the coming period, it remains to be seen how Anipops' catalog will expand and how visible AI will be on the platform. Komata stated that the platform will continue to support creators and aims to make anime more accessible. The future of AI-powered anime platforms will be shaped by the user base Anipops manages to attract.
