Shift Up Acquires Resident Evil Creator Shinji Mikami's New Studio

South Korean gaming giant Shift Up has made a massive move that is set to shake up the gaming world. The studio behind hit titles like Stellar Blade and Goddess of Victory: Nikke announced a strategic partnership with Unbound Game Studio, founded by the legendary director Shinji Mikami, known as the father of the Resident Evil series. Initially announced as a collaboration, this development was confirmed as a direct "acquisition" through an update on Shift Up's official website.
This move demonstrates how much Shift Up has expanded its vision, especially following the global success of Stellar Blade on PlayStation 5. The company's CEO, Kim Hyung-tae, has frequently expressed his admiration for the Japanese school of game development in previous interviews. Now, by joining forces with Shinji Mikami, one of the greatest masters of the genre, they aim to solidify their dominance in both the mobile and console markets.
Shinji Mikami is considered one of the most respected names in the gaming world. Having laid the foundations for iconic series such as Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, and Devil May Cry while at Capcom, Mikami later founded Tango Gameworks, where he delivered successful projects like The Evil Within and Hi-Fi RUSH. After leaving Tango Gameworks in 2023, there was much curiosity about the master director's next destination; this new journey, which began with Unbound Game Studio, is expected to result in highly ambitious projects when combined with Shift Up's financial strength.
So, what does this mean for us, the players? When Shift Up's success in visual aesthetics and action mechanics is combined with Mikami's mastery of the horror and survival genre, the gaming world could be introduced to a brand new type of hybrid production. Although no official details have been shared yet regarding the first project the studio is working on, this acquisition will significantly increase Shift Up's value in its IPO process. We can already start getting excited for the first game announcement from Unbound Game Studio in the coming months.
