Sonic the Hedgehog is 35: New Games and Surprise Collaborations from Sega!

One of the most iconic characters in the gaming world, Sonic the Hedgehog, is officially celebrating his 35th birthday! This high-speed adventure, which began on the Sega Genesis console on June 23, 1991, has transformed into a massive media empire today. In a live stream held to celebrate this special anniversary, Sega shared a series of announcements that will excite both nostalgia enthusiasts and modern gamers. The most notable news from the celebrations was the release of Sonic Frontiers: Definitive Edition for the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2 console.
The anniversary events were not limited to new hardware. With the 4th patch released for the popular racing game Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, the Classic Sonic character was added to the roster, and it was announced that the turtles will also hit the track with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) DLC pack coming on July 29, 2026. Additionally, Sonic Pico Park was announced as part of a collaboration with the indie gaming hit Pico Park. It was revealed that characters like Shadow and Sonic Pico Cat will be playable in this new project. Sega is also preparing to offer two special physical packages, titled Classic Sonic Collection and Modern Sonic Collection, to Switch users in October 2026.
For those who love nostalgia, the Legacy Cartridge Collection, prepared in collaboration with iam8bit, brings back the first two games of the series in the form of original Sega Genesis cartridges. Some of these limited-edition cartridges will come with a rare "Chaos Emerald" variant. From an industry perspective, Sega made history as the first Japanese game developer to host a session at the Cannes Lions 2026 festival. This is seen as the greatest proof that the Sonic brand is not just a game series, but has become a global pop culture phenomenon with productions like Sonic Movie 3 and Sonic Prime.
Created by Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara, Sonic has experienced many ups and downs in his 35-year history, but has managed to rise from the ashes with new strategies led by Sonic Team. In particular, the success of the "open-zone" design that began with Sonic Frontiers and the cinematic universe makes the brand's future brighter than ever. Fans will now continue to celebrate the legacy of this legendary hedgehog with museum exhibitions, concerts, and a new narrative podcast series that will last throughout the year. This new era that Sega has entered with the motto "Fast Forever" signals that Sonic will be in our lives for another 35 years.
