30th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Winners Announced: Grand Prize Goes to Hon nara Uruhodo!

The winners of the eagerly anticipated 30th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in the manga world have been officially announced. In the organization, which is organized by Asahi Shimbun and considered one of the most respected awards in the industry, this year's Manga Grand Prize was won by Hon nara Uruhodo (Books Are Plenty) by Ao Kojima. According to the announcement made on April 26, 2026, the work received full marks from the jury for its narrative depth and artistic success, placing it at the top.
The award list includes not only the grand prize but also remarkable works in different categories. The New Creator Prize went to Mado Saito's innovative work Kaijū o Kaibō Suru (Kaiju Autopsy), while the Short Work Prize was won by Kawajiro's short story collection Atarashii Tomodachi: Kawajirō Tanpenshū. Additionally, for his significant contributions to manga culture, Kazuyoshi Takeda was awarded the Special Prize for his work Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise. The winners will be presented with the iconic Astro Boy bronze statue and a cash prize at a ceremony to be held at Yurakucho Asahi Hall in Tokyo on June 11.
The grand prize winner, Hon nara Uruhodo, is actually a work that has been sweeping awards recently. Serialized in Kadokawa's Harta magazine, this work is an episodic drama story set in an old bookstore called "Jugatsu-do," which tells of the bond between books and people in an emotional language. Having previously won first place in the Manga Taisho 2026 and Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2026 lists, the series has already won the hearts of book lovers. With this work, Ao Kojima has once again proven his mastery in capturing small but meaningful details in everyday life.
Held since 1997, the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize takes its name from the legendary artist Osamu Tezuka, known as the "God of Manga." Winning this award is not only a matter of prestige for a manga but also opens a huge door for global recognition and potential anime adaptations. This award, which has been won by masterpieces such as Monster, Doraemon, and March Comes in Like a Lion in the past, serves as a testament that Hon nara Uruhodo has now entered the ranks of the unforgettable in manga history.
