New Manga Coming from Mami Tsumura, Creator of Kotaro Lives Alone: Tanosuke no Kawazanyō Launches on September 11

Mami Tsumura is back with a new story! The beloved creator of the Kotaro Lives Alone (Kotaro wa Hitorigurashi) series is preparing to return to the manga scene with her new manga Tanosuke no Kawazanyō. It has been officially announced that the new series will begin publication on September 11.
Although not all details about the new series' plot and the magazine in which it will be serialized have been shared yet, Tsumura's signature warm, humane, and emotional storytelling style is expected to continue in this new project. The name Tanosuke no Kawazanyō signals that, like her previous works, it will offer a character-driven drama from everyday life. Visuals from the series' first chapter and a promotional page are expected to be shared in the coming days.
This new manga represents an important return for Tsumura. The author's most well-known work, Kotaro Lives Alone, began serialization in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior magazine in 2015 and concluded with 10 volumes in 2023. The series, which follows four-year-old Kotaro Sato as he begins living alone in an apartment and forms unexpected bonds with his neighbors, was highly acclaimed both in Japan and internationally. In 2022, the series received a 10-episode anime adaptation by Netflix and became one of the most-watched anime on the platform. It was also adapted into a live-action series by TV Asahi in 2021.
Mami Tsumura is known especially for telling themes such as loneliness, trauma, and solidarity in the adult world through child characters, blending humor and tears. Kotaro Lives Alone received full marks from critics for tackling heavy subjects like parental neglect and abuse beneath its cute artwork. Therefore, fans expect the author to tell a similarly heartwarming story in her new series that both makes them laugh and think. As the popularity of this kind of "healing" (iyashikei) drama in the seinen genre has increased in recent years, Tsumura's return is seen as an important move for magazines as well.
For now, no official synopsis or character introduction has been made for Tanosuke no Kawazanyō. However, as the September 11 launch date approaches, more information is expected from Shogakukan. Time will tell whether the new series, just like Kotaro, has anime adaptation potential. We will closely follow the developments and share the first chapter details with you as soon as they are clarified!
