50th Kodansha Manga Awards Winners Announced: Gachiakuta and The Darwin Incident Take the Top Spots!

One of the most exciting days of the year for manga enthusiasts has arrived! Japanese publishing giant Kodansha has officially announced the winners of the 50th annual Kodansha Manga Awards. In this half-century-old organization, some of the most talked-about works of recent years have reached the top in various categories. According to the announcement made on May 11, 2026, Gachiakuta won "Best Shonen," Re-Living My Life with a Boyfriend Who Doesn't Remember Me won "Best Shojo," and The Darwin Incident won the "Best General Manga" award.
Gachiakuta, which took the lead in the Shonen category, represents a major victory for its creator, Kei Urana. Urana, a former assistant to the legendary Fire Force and Soul Eater artist Atsushi Ohkubo, was personally named as his "successor" by the master himself. The manga, which began its journey in Weekly Shonen Magazine in 2022, quickly gained a cult following with its unique "graffiti" style art set in a dystopian world filled with trash. The success of the anime adaptation produced by Studio Bones in 2025 has solidified the series' popularity with this award.
In the General category, The Darwin Incident (Darwin Jihen) by Shun Umezawa did not disappoint expectations. The series, which previously won the 2022 Manga Taisho award, addresses social discrimination and terrorism through the story of Charlie, a "humanzee" (human-chimpanzee hybrid), with deep social criticism. Published in Monthly Afternoon magazine since 2020 and exceeding 1.8 million copies worldwide, the series became a favorite among adult readers, especially with its anime adaptation released in early 2026.
