Ano Fuyu no Ryusei ~Hitotose~: The Emotional Story of a Family Battling Childhood Cancer Begins

The manga world has welcomed a new drama series that will both warm and break your heart. Debuting on the Manga Box platform on May 12, Ano Fuyu no Ryusei ~Hitotose~ (The Shooting Star of That Winter ~One Year~) follows the story of an ordinary family of four whose lives are turned upside down by a tragic medical diagnosis. The story is written by Mami Kashiwabara, known for her popular astronomy-themed work Sora no Manimani (At the Mercy of the Sky), while the illustrations are by Tsuyoshi Matsumoto, the master artist behind works such as Giri Giri and Kimi no Knife.
The story begins when a peaceful family, where everything seems to be going well, learns that their youngest brother has been diagnosed with childhood cancer. The term Hitotose (One Year) in the series' subtitle refers to the critical year the family spends following this difficult diagnosis and how they cling to one another during this time. The series stands out as a "human drama" that delves deeply not only into the medical challenges of the illness but also into the psychological changes of the family members and the strength of the bond of love between them.
One of the most notable aspects of this project is that Horipro, one of Japan's largest entertainment agencies, provided the original concept (原案) for the project. The fact that Horipro, typically known for talent management and massive stage productions like Death Note: The Musical, is directly providing a concept for a manga project demonstrates how content production strategies in the industry are expanding.
