Hiro Mashima's Dark Fantasy Series Dead Rock Goes on Hiatus: New Arc "Godfall" to Begin in Winter

Hiro Mashima's dark fantasy world Dead Rock is in the spotlight with a development that has left readers both curious and excited. With the chapter released on May 8, 2026, the series' first major story arc, the "Academy Arc," has officially come to an end. The manga, published in Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Magazine, announced that it is taking a short break following this significant turning point. However, fans won't have to wait too long; the series will return this winter with a brand new arc.
The name of the upcoming story arc is already known: "Godfall." Dead Rock, which began serialization in July 2023, offers a much darker tone compared to the cheerful atmosphere we are accustomed to from Mashima's previous works. The story revolves around a young demon named Yakuto who participates in the entrance exam for Dead Rock, a prestigious institution that trains Demon Kings. However, Yakuto's true goal is not just to graduate, but to kill the "God" who is the founder of the school and the ruler of the three worlds. This theme of revenge stands out as one of the biggest features that distinguishes the series from Mashima's previous works.
Hiro Mashima is known as one of the most prolific names in the industry. The mangaka, creator of massive hits such as Fairy Tail, Edens Zero, and Rave Master, also continues to oversee the story flow of the Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest series. 2026 is a very busy year for Mashima, as it marks the 20th anniversary of the Fairy Tail series. This short break will allow the artist to both plan the new story arc and further expand the world of the series. Mashima is known for his legendary work ethic, reportedly working 17 hours a day.
