Yasuhisa Hara's massive manga series Kingdom, which has taken the world by storm and sold over 120 million copies, continues its journey on the big screen without slowing down. An exciting development has been announced for the fifth live-action film in the series, Kingdom: Tamashii no Kessen (The Decisive Battle of the Soul). According to the official announcement, casting has been completed for two new characters who hold significant places in the emotional depth of the story. Award-winning actress Aju Makita will portray Kou, a palace attendant known for her loyalty to the young king Ei Sei, while we will see former Nogizaka46 member Mizuki Yamashita in the role of her closest friend, You.
Beyond being mere palace attendants in the Kingdom universe, these two characters stand out as figures who share the loneliness in Ei Sei's inner world and support him in his most difficult moments. Aju Makita is a name who has proven her talent with performances in internationally successful productions such as Shoplifters and True Mothers. Mizuki Yamashita, on the other hand, continues to expand her fan base with the success she has shown in acting following her idol career. The friendship between the two and their loyalty to the king will be an element that balances the political tension within the palace alongside the epic struggles on the battlefield.
Looking at the history of the series, we see that the Kingdom live-action films have become a phenomenon in Japanese cinema. In this journey that began in 2019, each new film has refreshed the success of the previous one at the box office. In particular, the fourth film, Kingdom: Return of the Great General, which was released in the summer of 2024, became one of the most-watched productions of the year, exceeding the 7.9 billion yen mark. The fifth film, which will once again be directed by Shinsuke Sato, will cover the great wars that determine the fate of China's unification, one of the most critical turning points in the manga. The series, which stars big names like Kento Yamazaki (Shin) and Ryo Yoshizawa (Ei Sei), aims to raise the bar even higher with this new installment.
For fans, this announcement is proof of how much the series values not only the action scenes but also the human aspects and development of the characters. Kingdom: Tamashii no Kessen will be released in theaters in Japan on July 17, 2026. This release date, which coincides with the 20th-anniversary celebrations of the manga, is of great importance in honoring the legacy of the series. Viewers will have the chance to experience Shin's struggle to become a great general and Ei Sei's dream of unifying China with a much larger and more impressive cast this time.
