Kuroda Mameta's New Manga Series "Ore wa Bishoujo VTuber" Hits Shelves with First Volume

At a time when the popularity of VTubers is at its peak, this trend is now making its mark on the manga world. Kuroda Mameta's new series "Ore wa Bishoujo VTuber" (I Am a Beautiful Girl VTuber) released its first volume in Japan on June 9. The series depicts the comedic and romantic events experienced by a VTuber who presents themselves as a beautiful girl in the virtual world but is actually a boy, trying to keep their secret.
The main character of the manga emerges one day as a VTuber and quickly gains a large fanbase. The problem is that their viewers must never learn that they are actually a boy. Moreover, things become even more complicated when the character encounters their real-life friends and acquaintances. Kuroda Mameta is known for their previously published romantic comedy works. With this new series, they blend the fun aspects of VTuber culture with the tension of hiding one's identity and a love triangle.
VTubers have become a huge phenomenon, especially in Japan. In addition to major agencies like Hololive and Nijisanji, independent virtual content creators also reach millions of followers. The manga industry is closely following this trend: in recent years, series with similar themes such as "VTuber nante Mitai" and "Virtual-chan" have been released. Kuroda's series appeals to both VTuber enthusiasts and classic romantic comedy readers. The cover of the first volume features a kawaii-designed girl character with bright pink hair – of course, this is our main character's virtual avatar.
The series is available for sale in Japan in digital and print formats. Although no international licensing agreement has been announced yet, VTuber-themed manga generally attract interest in the West as well. For example, the series "VTuber Legend: How I Went Viral after Getting Reincarnated" was released in English. Kuroda Mameta's new work stands out especially for addressing current themes such as secret identity, impersonation, and digital age love. It is not yet known when the second volume will come, but the positive reception of the first volume signals that a continuation is likely.
