The manga world has lost another pioneer of sports-themed works. Master mangaka Mikio Yoshimori, creator of classic series such as Shimatte Ikouze! and Raipachi-kun, passed away on April 24 at the age of 84. The news of the artist's passing was announced to the public by his son, the famous Edogawa Rampo Award-winning novelist Daisuke Yoshimori. The statement noted that the master artist had been battling malignant lymphoma for some time.
Born in 1940, Mikio Yoshimori was one of the most important representatives of the "spo-kon" (sports and guts) genre, which took Japan by storm, especially in the 1970s. The artist's most iconic work, Shimatte Ikouze!, was serialized in Weekly Shonen Champion magazine between 1974 and 1979. Published in a total of 26 volumes, this baseball manga went down in history as one of the most important productions that fueled the passion for sports among the youth of that era. The artist's other popular work, Raipachi-kun, reached a wide audience by meeting readers on the pages of Monthly Shonen Magazine.
Yoshimori's works were known not only for the technical details of sports but also for their profound narrative that emphasized the characters' inner journeys, their indomitable spirit, and the importance of teamwork. The artist, who solidified the place of baseball in Japanese culture with works such as Koshien no Tsuchi and Ganbare! Raipachi-kun, was a source of inspiration for many young mangaka throughout his career. His son, Daisuke Yoshimori, stated that his father was peaceful until his final moments and that the works he left behind are his greatest legacy.
