Masa Ichikawa Launches New Manga Based on DC's Joker Character

One of the beloved names of the manga world, Masa Ichikawa, returns with a brand new manga focusing on Joker, one of DC Comics' most famous villains. The series, titled "Machibura JOKER", will meet readers on July 2 in Kodansha's weekly Morning magazine. This announcement follows Ichikawa's previous unique interpretation of the Sherlock Holmes universe with "Moriarty the Patriot" (Yūkoku no Moriarty).
Masa Ichikawa had gained a large fanbase especially with "Moriarty the Patriot", which centered on the criminal genius James Moriarty. This series was published in Shueisha's Jump SQ magazine from 2016 to 2023 and was well-received in both manga and anime adaptations. Ichikawa's take on DC's chaotic anti-hero Joker brings to many readers' minds a similar "villain-centric story." However, this time the character will be the clown prince of Gotham created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, not by Arthur Conan Doyle.
DC Comics collaborating with Japanese mangaka in recent years is not a new trend. Previously, series such as "Batman: Justice Buster" (by Eichi Shimizu and Tomoyuki Ogino) and "Joker: One Operation Joker" (by Satoshi Miyagawa and Keisuke Gotō) were published. However, Ichikawa taking on this project holds great significance, especially for fans of "Moriarty the Patriot". Because Ichikawa had previously proven his mastery in stories told from the perspective of criminals. It is eagerly awaited how Joker's madness and intelligence will take shape under Ichikawa's pen.
The word "Machibura" (待ちぶら) in the series title means "idly waiting" or "aimlessly wandering" in Japanese. This could be a clue fitting Joker's nature: perhaps the story will focus on Joker creating random chaos in the streets of Gotham. The genre of the series, how many chapters it will run, or whether an anime adaptation is planned have not been announced yet. However, Morning magazine typically features works with a more serious tone aimed at adults (such as "Vinland Saga", "Giant Killing"). This suggests that the series may adopt a darker and more psychological approach.
For manga readers and DC fans, this collaboration is one of those rare moments where two great cultures intersect. The character depth and intricate plotting in Ichikawa's previous works provide an ideal foundation to reflect Joker's complex personality. If you are expecting a story in the vein of "Moriarty the Patriot", "Machibura JOKER" might be just the series you're looking for. With the first chapter being published on July 2, readers will see Ichikawa's interpretation of Joker for the first time. Additional promotional images and trailers from Morning magazine are expected in the coming days. Stay tuned!
