The Legend Returns: A New Patlabor Manga is Coming from Masami Yūki

There is great news from the front of Mobile Police Patlabor, one of the most beloved classics of the mecha world! Masami Yūki, the original manga artist of the series and a key member of the creative team Headgear, is returning to the legendary series with a new one-shot manga. This new work, which will be published in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine, marks the first comprehensive return to the Patlabor universe in manga format since the original series Yūki completed in 1994.
The Patlabor series, with its original manga published between 1988 and 1994 consisting of 22 volumes, was not just a robot story but also offered a profound police procedural and social critique. The series, which tells the adventures of the Special Vehicles Section 2 (SV2) using giant patrol robots called Ingram, crowned its success by winning the 36th Shogakukan Manga Award at the time. Masami Yūki's unique drawing style and character depth placed characters like Noa Izumi and Asuma Shinohara among the unforgettable figures of the anime and manga world.
This new one-shot manga announcement is seen as part of the Patlabor brand's recent revival efforts. As you may recall, work on the new anime project of the series, Patlabor EZY, continues under the direction of Yutaka Izubuchi. Masami Yūki's new manga promises a nostalgic journey for old fans while solidifying the series' place in the modern era. Beyond Patlabor, Yūki is also known for works such as Birdy the Mighty (Tetsuwan Birdy) and Kyūkyoku Chōjin R, and is a sector-leading artist.
