Moyoco Anno's 'Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen' Manga to Become a Musical in New York in Fall 2026

The acclaimed work by one of Japan's leading mangakas, Moyoco Anno's 'Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen' (鼻下長紳士回顧録 - Bikachō Shinshi Kaikoroku), is set to be brought to the stage in a long-running musical production Off-Broadway in New York starting in Fall 2026. This significant adaptation marks the first American musical to be staged in English from a Japanese manga, once again showcasing the global impact of Japanese popular culture.
The manga tells the story of Colette, a courtesan working at a brothel called 'Night Egg' in the vibrant atmosphere of early 20th-century Paris. Colette begins to write her experiences with 'amorous gentlemen' and her complex relationship with her gigolo lover, Leon, in a notebook she received from one of her clients, a novelist. The work explores mature themes such as desire, escape, the depths of human nature, and the harsh realities of life with an elegant and striking art style. Published in two volumes in Shodensha's Feel Young magazine from 2013 to 2018, 'Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen' won the Excellence Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2020.
