New Announcement from Legendary Mangaka Naoki Yamamoto After 6 Years: "Goji" Arrives in June

Naoki Yamamoto, one of the most unique and provocative voices in the manga world, has returned after a long hiatus with news that will excite his fans. According to an official announcement by Ohta Publishing, the master artist's new single-volume (tankobon) work titled Goji (Five) will hit shelves on June 29, 2026. This new release marks his first new book since Inaka (Countryside), which was published in 2020 and received significant attention.
Yamamoto's return is not limited to just a new book. In honor of the new work, a special exhibition featuring the artist's original drawings will be held in Osaka. In keeping with the artist's characteristic style, it has been stated that this exhibition will be adult-oriented and will include raw drawings that address the dark and desirous sides of human nature. Born in 1960, the artist has also produced works under various pseudonyms such as Tō Moriyama throughout his career and made a name for himself with cult classics like Asatte Dance and Blue, particularly since the late 1980s.
Naoki Yamamoto is known in the manga industry as a "mangaka's mangaka." His minimalist yet emotionally heavy drawing style sets him apart from mainstream artists. Notably, his Red series, published between 2007 and 2013, which covers radical left-wing movements in Japan, won an Excellence Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival, proving the artist's literary depth. His new work, Goji, is also expected to carry that melancholic and realistic tone unique to Yamamoto, questioning social norms and individual psychology.
This development is of great importance, especially for manga lovers who are tired of mainstream shonen series and are looking for more mature works with high literary value. His continued collaboration with a publisher like Ohta Publishing, which features alternative and bold works, signals that Goji will have an uncensored and free narrative. Following the June release, whether the work will receive translations on international platforms has already become a subject of curiosity.
