New Series in Haruta Magazine: "Haru no Susume" Begins, "Vlad Dracula" Ends After 9 Years

One of Japan's leading manga magazines, Haruta, has released its 135th issue (Vol. 135) today (June 15, 2025). This issue brings two significant developments: the start of a new series and the farewell to a long-running one.
The new work titled "Haru no Susume" (Spring's Recommendation) by mangaka Narita Uozawa debuted with its first chapter. Uozawa, previously known for short stories, draws attention with this series as his first long-form work in Haruta. Although the plot has not been fully revealed, the released preview emphasizes "a pure love story of a tough-looking man." This genre aligns with the romantic and dramatic works typically published in Haruta.
On the other hand, the same issue marks the end of the "Vlad Dracula" series after a 9-year journey. Authored and illustrated by Kazuhiro Fujita (creator of the famous Ushio to Tora and Karakuri Circus), this series blended vampire legends with historical fiction. Fujita's Vlad Dracula had been serialized in Haruta since 2016, reaching a total of 20 volumes. With the final chapter, the story concluded spanning from the Ottoman-era Wallachia to the present day. Fujita had previously described this series as "my darkest work" in interviews.
Haruta magazine has been published under KADOKAWA since 2014 and is known for hosting literary and profound manga such as Mushishi and Kino's Journey. This issue also features other series like "Uchuu no Kaba". It is a matter of curiosity how the new Haru no Susume will unfold in future issues. As fans of Fujita discuss the end of Vlad Dracula, they are already excited for the master's next project.
In conclusion, Haruta Vol. 135 heralds both a new beginning and the close of an era. Readers will witness Narita Uozawa's romantic storytelling while experiencing emotional moments with the finale of Kazuhiro Fujita's 9-year epic. The next issue (Vol. 136) will publish the second chapter of Haru no Susume and likely announce the volume release of Vlad Dracula.
