Beer Brewing in Akita: The First Volume of the Ogre Craft Manga Hits the Shelves

The highly anticipated first volume of the Ogre Craft (Oga Craft) manga, serialized in Square Enix’s popular seinen magazine Young Gangan, was released in Japan on April 24, 2026. Written by Shuzaburo Iwami, this new work tells the story of Himeko Hadachi, who escapes the chaos of modern life to find herself in a craft that blends tradition with modernity. The series is receiving full marks from readers, particularly for its highly realistic and detailed depiction of beer brewing processes.
The story centers on 21-year-old Himeko Hadachi, who leaves her life in Tokyo behind after her parents' divorce and moves to her mother's hometown in Akita prefecture. Unemployed and having lost her motivation for life, Himeko accidentally stumbles upon a brewery called Ogre Craft, which has been converted from an old warehouse. Enchanted by the rich aroma of the beer offered to her by Nodoka Futada, who works there, Himeko finds herself suddenly immersed in this challenging yet enjoyable world of production, despite having never been introduced to alcohol culture before.
The series creator, Shuzaburo Iwami, is known for his previously popular series My Girlfriend is Shobitch (Boku no Kanojo ga Majime Sugiru Sho-bitch na Ken), which was also adapted into an anime. In this new project, Iwami retains the humorous touches of his previous work while offering a more mature and educational atmosphere that leans toward the "healing" (iyashikei) genre. Blended with the natural beauty and local culture of Akita, the story offers readers not only character development but also information in the style of a technical "how-to" guide.
The rising interest in local craft beers in Japan in recent years is also triggering the popularity of such thematic manga. Ogre Craft does not just promote a beverage; it also appeals to a young adult readership by exploring themes of returning to rural areas and making a fresh start. Elements such as the technical details of the beer fermentation process, the selection of ingredients used, and the impact of Akita's climate on production set the series apart from its peers. With the first volume garnering great interest, we look forward to seeing how Himeko will overcome the obstacles on her path to becoming a professional "brewer" in future chapters.
