Return to Shironagasu Island Enters the Manga World: Popular Mystery Game Now in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine

An exciting development has occurred for fans of mystery and adventure indie games. The official manga adaptation of the game Return to Shironagasu Island (Shironagasu-jima e no Kikan), which has a large cult following in Japan, officially began in the June issue of Kodansha's Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, released on May 9. The illustrations for the new series are handled by the talented artist Muratan.
This manga adaptation is not the series' first venture into the media world, but it is one of the most anticipated. The project, which was previously planned for 2024 in Monthly Young Ace magazine with a different artist but was canceled due to editorial issues, has made a fresh start under the Bessatsu Shonen Magazine banner. The fact that the first chapter was presented with a color opening page highlights the importance the publisher places on this series and their confidence in the game's popularity.
Return to Shironagasu Island was born as a visual novel developed single-handedly by indie developer Hyogo Onimushi. After its release on Steam in 2020, it quickly reached over 100,000 sales with its immersive story and suspenseful atmosphere. The game's success was not limited to sales; the crowdfunding campaign launched in 2021 for voice acting and a Nintendo Switch port managed to raise approximately 26 million yen (1323% of the target), far exceeding the targeted 2 million yen.
