A New Breath in the Manga World: ReVIBES Project Begins with the Legendary COBRA

The ReVIBES Project, which aims to bring together classic works accepted as the "immortal masterpieces" of the manga and anime world with today's most talented modern artists, has been officially announced. The main goal of the project is to revitalize legendary intellectual properties (IP) with contemporary artistic interpretations and pass this legacy on to new generations. In the first leg of this exciting initiative, the iconic science fiction series COBRA and world-renowned collage artist Kosuke Kawamura are joining forces.
Created by Buichi Terasawa, COBRA first began its adventure in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1978. Known for his iconic Psychogun weapon hidden in his left arm and his charismatic stance, the adventures of the space pirate Cobra have become one of the most important works in manga history, selling more than 50 million copies worldwide. Buichi Terasawa, who passed away last September 2023, was one of the first pioneers to use digital coloring techniques in manga and was a genius trained alongside Osamu Tezuka. This new project carries great importance in terms of honoring Terasawa's legacy with a modern aesthetic.
On the other side of the collaboration, Kosuke Kawamura is considered one of the most influential graphic designers and artists of today. Currently serving as the creative director of Uniqlo UT, Kawamura is particularly known for his "shredder collage" technique. He is a name well-known to anime fans for the massive murals he prepared for Katsuhiro Otomo's AKIRA series and his work with series such as Gundam and Evangelion. Kawamura's unique method of shredding and reassembling is preparing to bring a whole new dimension to Cobra's retro-futuristic world.
The ReVIBES Project aims to blend classic manga and anime aesthetics with modern street culture and contemporary art, beyond just being a nostalgia project. In the later stages of the project, other legendary series are expected to be paired with artists from different disciplines. For fans, this collaboration offers the opportunity to experience the classic characters they love in a visual language they have never seen before, while building a solid bridge between the past and the future of the manga industry.
