Akane-banashi Anime Coming to Netflix: The Art of Rakugo Takes the Global Stage

The news the anime world has been eagerly awaiting has finally arrived! Akane-banashi, one of the most unique series from Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, is preparing to meet audiences on the Netflix platform on May 17, 2026. According to the announcement from the streaming giant, the series will make a grand opening with its first two episodes and will continue to air new episodes every week thereafter. Furthermore, fans will be able to watch the series both with the original Japanese audio and subtitles, as well as the highly anticipated English dub.
The story takes place in the world of Rakugo, the traditional Japanese art of storytelling. Our protagonist, Akane Osaki, is a young girl who witnesses her father, Shinta Arakawa, being unjustly expelled from the profession during a prestigious exam. Determined to restore her father's honor and prove the value of his art, Akane vows to climb to the top of this challenging and disciplined art form. While Rakugo performers (rakugoka), who bring dozens of characters to life using only a folding fan and a small towel, transport the audience to the limits of their imagination, Akane writes a modern story of revenge and success in this traditional world.
The team behind the anime is quite ambitious. Produced by Studio ZEXCS, the director's chair is occupied by Ayumu Watanabe, known for successful works such as Children of the Sea and Komi Can't Communicate. While character designs are entrusted to Kii Tanaka, the series' music is composed by Akio Izutsu. The voice cast features star names such as Anna Nagase as Akane, Takuya Eguchi as Karashi Nerimaya, and Rie Takahashi as Hikaru Koragi. Additionally, professional rakugoka Kikuhiko Hayashiya serves as a consultant to maintain the authenticity of the performances.
The original manga, written by Yuki Suenaga and illustrated by Takamasa Moue, has achieved great success since its debut in 2022. The series, which has been nominated for the Manga Taisho and placed in prestigious awards such as the Next Manga Awards, has also received praise from names like One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda and legendary director Hideaki Anno. Blending a traditional art with modern "shonen" competition, Akane-banashi is seen not just as a hobby manga, but as a drama that offers deep character development. The May 17 Netflix premiere will be a major opportunity for this cultural treasure to reach wider audiences worldwide.
