AnimeJapan 2026: Future Star Animators Receive Their Awards!

AnimeJapan 2026, one of the world's largest anime festivals, was not only the stage for announcements of major productions this year but also for the rise of young talents who will shape the future of the industry. Held at Tokyo Big Sight on March 28-29, the New Creator Awards, organized in collaboration with Crunchyroll, found their winners. The Grand Prix, the competition's top honor, went to the short film POLICE MEN, created by Kyoto Seika University student Yui Hara and her team.
In this prestigious ceremony organized to encourage young animators, winners were offered not only cash prizes but also opportunities to take their careers to an international level. While Grand Prix winner Yui Hara received a prize worth 1 million yen (approximately $6,000), the work One with the City (Kono Machi to, Tomo ni), directed by Raiki Murao from HAL Nagoya, was awarded the Crunchyroll Award and won a 1 million yen scholarship. Additionally, all winning creators earned the chance to attend Anime Expo 2026, which will be held in Los Angeles in July, as special guests.
The significance of these awards for fans and the industry is immense. The anime industry has been facing increasing global demand and a need for skilled labor in recent years. This platform, where 13 finalists from 50 different educational institutions competed, serves as a showcase for studios looking for fresh blood. Works among the winners, such as Offbeat (Technical Award) and Requiem for the Endless Night (Directing Award), have already begun reaching audiences in over 200 countries via Crunchyroll. This proves how quickly works produced with an amateur spirit can find a response in the professional world.
Another important development shared at the event concerned the future of AnimeJapan. It was announced that the festival, which has been held in Tokyo since 2014, will move to Osaka (Intex Osaka) for the first time in 2027 and 2028. These structural changes in the industry and the support given to young talents show that the anime world will continue to grow not only with existing series but also with the vision of the next generation of creators. The next stop for these young talents, Anime Expo from July 2-5, will be the next major destination where we look forward to following the global echoes of these achievements.
