Crunchyroll Announces July Premiere for Though I Am an Inept Villainess Anime

A fresh and fun take is coming to the "villainess" genre, one of the most popular themes in the anime world in recent years. Crunchyroll has officially announced that the highly anticipated Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court (known in Japanese as Futsutsuka na Akujo de wa Gozaimasu ga) anime will premiere on the platform in July 2026. Along with the announcement, an English-subtitled trailer introducing the series' atmosphere and characters was shared, further heightening fan excitement.
The story follows a mysterious body swap between the noble and elegant Kou Reirin, known as the "Butterfly" of the imperial court, and the jealous Kei Shuju, nicknamed the "Rat." After their bodies are swapped due to a trap set by Shuju, Reirin is unexpectedly pleased with the situation. While her original body was extremely weak and sickly, her new body (Shuju's) is healthy enough to withstand any hardship. The series, which features Sayumi Watabe voicing Reirin and Ayane Sakura voicing Shuju, tells the story of how Reirin will turn palace life upside down with positive energy while inhabiting this new, "hated" body.
The anime's production is handled by the Millepensee studio, which has previously worked on notable projects such as So I'm a Spider, So What?. The director's chair is occupied by Shin Itagaki, an experienced name in the industry. The original light novel series, written by Satsuki Nakamura and illustrated by Ei Ohitsuji, achieved great success in Japan and solidified its popularity with the subsequent manga adaptation. The series stands out from other examples of the genre, particularly with its character depth and humorous narrative that subverts classic tropes.
Although the "villainess" genre usually focuses on characters trying to change their fates, the motivation offered by Though I Am an Inept Villainess—willingly accepting being a villainess for the sake of a healthy body—adds a fresh perspective to the story. Reirin's unconventional and cheerful attitude toward palace intrigues will offer viewers both comedy and drama. This move by Crunchyroll strengthens the platform's 2026 summer season catalog while ensuring the series reaches a wider global audience.
