Cult Classic Anime Film Tekkonkinkreet Returns to Theaters with Special 20th Anniversary 4K Restoration!

One of the unique and visually striking productions in the anime world, Tekkonkinkreet, is preparing to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its original release in 2006 with a magnificent 4K restoration. Tekkonkinkreet is director Michael Arias's debut feature film, adapted from Taiyo Matsumoto's manga series of the same name, which was serialized in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits magazine between 1993 and 1994. The film tells the story of the orphaned street kids Black (Kuro) and White (Shiro) living in the complex and chaotic Treasure Town. As these contrasting characters fight against yakuza and real estate developers trying to take over the city, the film deeply explores themes of friendship, loss of innocence, and urban transformation. The animation, bearing the signature of Studio 4°C, blends hand-drawn and 3D computer graphics, offering a groundbreaking, dynamic, and immersive visual spectacle for its time.
The film's artistic and narrative depth has been crowned with numerous awards. Tekkonkinkreet won the Animation of the Year award at the 2008 Japan Academy Prize, and was honored with the Ōfuji Noburō Award at the 2006 Mainichi Film Awards.
