Historic Success for Detective Conan: New Film "Fallen Angel of the Highway" Opens with Box Office Record

The legendary detective is back, and this time he is faster than ever! The 29th feature film in the Detective Conan (Meitantei Conan) series, Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway (Highway no Datenshi), took the box office by storm upon its release in Japan on April 10. The film grossed a staggering 1.13 billion yen (approximately 7.4 million dollars) on its opening day, breaking the record for the biggest opening day in the series' history. This figure sets a new bar, surpassing the 1.05 billion yen opening of 2025's One-eyed Flashback and the 960 million yen opening of 2024's The Million-dollar Pentagram.
Set on the high-speed roads of Yokohama, this new adventure focuses on Chihaya Hagiwara, a traffic police officer known as the "Wind Goddess" of the Kanagawa Prefectural Police. The story follows the chaos created by a mysterious black motorcycle (Lucifer) that appears at a motorcycle festival and the relentless pursuit by the police's next-generation white motorcycle, Angel. One of the biggest elements that makes this film special for fans is the story's deep connection to the Police Academy Arc. The film features significant emotional moments regarding Chihaya Hagiwara's past traumas and her late brother Kenji Hagiwara and his friend Jinpei Matsuda.
At the gala event held at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya in Tokyo on April 11, the voice cast met with fans. Minami Takayama, the voice of Edogawa Conan, Miyuki Sawashiro (Chihaya Hagiwara), who took over the role from the late Atsuko Tanaka, and director Takahiro Hasui were on stage. Miyuki Sawashiro stated that it was a great honor for her to take on this iconic role and that she was happy to feel the love of the fans. Guest stars Ryusei Yokohama and Mei Hata also attended the event to join the team. The film is directed by Takahiro Hasui, known for Mob Psycho 100 III, while the screenplay is written by the series' veteran Takahiro Okura.
Launched in 1994 by Gosho Aoyama, this massive series has maintained its popularity for over 30 years with both its manga and anime. Detective Conan films, which have become a tradition in Japan every year, possess a box office power that even surpasses Hollywood productions. Crowned with the theme song "Last Dance Anata to" performed by the famous artist MISIA, this production offers not just a mystery story, but also an emotional journey that sheds light on the characters' pasts. As the 30th anniversary of the series approaches, eyes are already turning to the next big project following this historic success.
