Ikoku Nikki Anime Receives Prestigious Galaxy Award: Artistic Achievement Crowned

The winners of the Galaxy Awards for March 2026, organized by the Japan Council for Better Radio and Television since 1963 and considered one of the most prestigious honors in the Japanese broadcasting world, have been announced. The anime Ikoku Nikki (Diary of a Strange Land), adapted from Tomoko Yamashita's award-winning manga of the same name, was deemed worthy of this award for its artistic depth and delicate storytelling. The selection committee particularly praised the series' handling of the emotional bond between characters and its high production quality.
Premiering on January 4, 2026, and consisting of 13 episodes, the anime follows the relationship between 15-year-old Asa Takumi, who lost her parents in a traffic accident, and her introverted aunt, Makio Koudai, who takes her in. Produced by Studio Shuka (Natsume's Book of Friends) and directed by Miyuki Oshiro, the music is composed by the legendary Kensuke Ushio, known for works such as Chainsaw Man and A Silent Voice. The jury stated that they awarded the anime for successfully establishing its visual style and sound design, creating an atmosphere that reflects the characters' efforts to understand each other as "foreigners living in different countries, yet so close."
The success of Ikoku Nikki is no coincidence; the original manga series was ranked highly on major lists such as Manga Taisho and Kono Manga ga Sugoi! while it was serialized in Feel Young magazine between 2017 and 2023. Also adapted into a live-action film starring Yui Aragaki in 2024, the series is known for telling the story of human psychology and the grieving process in a sincere language without resorting to agitation. The voice acting performances of Miyuki Sawashiro (Makio) and Fuko Mori (Asa) in the anime adaptation are also cited as key elements that reinforce this emotional depth.
This monthly award for March makes Ikoku Nikki a strong candidate for the grand annual Galaxy Awards ceremony to be held in June. Previously won by works such as Ranking of Kings and Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, this award is proof that the anime is recognized not just as a form of entertainment, but as a high-quality television drama. Fans are now eagerly awaiting the release of the series' physical copies and the soundtrack album by Kensuke Ushio in April following this artistic achievement.
