Kyoto Animation Brings Award-Winning Manga "Credits Roll Into the Sea" to the Big Screen: Release Date 2027!

One of the most prestigious studios in the anime world, Kyoto Animation (KyoAni), has announced its new project that has excited fans. The award-winning manga series Credits Roll Into the Sea (known in Japanese as Umi ga Hashiru Endroll) by John Tarachine is being adapted into an anime film. According to the official announcement made on May 10, 2026, this highly anticipated production will meet audiences in 2027. The director's chair will be occupied by the master Taichi Ishidate, known for emotionally profound works such as Violet Evergarden and Beyond the Boundary.
The story focuses on the life of 65-year-old Umiko Chino, who has recently lost her husband. Going to a cinema for the first time in decades, Umiko meets Kai, a film design student. This chance encounter brings to light a truth Umiko had suppressed within herself: she doesn't just want to watch films, she wants to make them. Enrolling in an art university at the age of 65, this work, which tells the story of Umiko stepping into the world of cinema alongside a generation much younger than her, captures hearts with the message that "creativity has no age." The source material, the manga, was selected as number one in the women's readers category in the 2022 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! list and was nominated for the prestigious Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.
Director Taichi Ishidate stated in his announcement regarding the project that he was deeply moved by the "gentle" nature of the work when he first read the manga. Ishidate said, "This film tells the story of a person confronting the creative process. Creating something is actually about confronting yourself in that process. I want to make a film where the audience can feel the pride and effort of people who connect with something with their whole soul."
