Madoka Magica -Walpurgisnacht: Rising- Film Gets Full Trailer and Release Date!

The wait is finally over! The official full trailer for the highly anticipated sequel film of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica series, -Walpurgisnacht: Rising-, has been released. Along with the trailer, the film's release date was confirmed: August 28, 2026. Moreover, the theme song will be performed by FictionJunction, led by the legendary anime music composer Yuki Kajiura.
The trailer mesmerized fans with both its visual splendor and emotional intensity. While maintaining the classic Madoka aesthetic, it hints that the complex relationship between Homura and Madoka will take on a new dimension. In particular, the rebirth of Walpurgisnacht seen in the final seconds of the trailer gave fans spine-chilling moments. FictionJunction's composition perfectly complements this atmosphere.
Let's look back a bit: When Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica aired in 2011, it turned the entire magical girl genre upside down. Behind Ume Aoki's cute character designs was Gen Urobuchi's dark and philosophical script. The 2013 film Rebellion took the story to an unexpected place, elevating Homura Akemi to the status of 'demon'. Now, a full 13 years after that film, this new work will continue the story under the title 'Walpurgisnacht: Rising'.
The film is once again produced by studio Shaft. In the director's seat, alongside series veteran director Akiyuki Shinbo, the Gekidan Inu Curry team is also involved. The cast remains largely the same; Aoi Yūki will reprise Madoka, and Chiwa Saitō will voice Homura. The trailer also features abstract visuals reminiscent of the Witch labyrinths from the original series, along with new transformation scenes for the characters.
So why is this film so important? Because the Madoka Magica series is not just an anime, but a cultural phenomenon that questions themes of 'hope and despair'. During the years of silence following Rebellion, fans created theories and waited with fan-made content. Now, the official sequel film will put an end to all that waiting. The broken clock and two figures holding hands at the end of the trailer may be a sign that time will be reshaped.
In the coming weeks, we may see new character posters, trailer analyses, and perhaps even news of a world premiere. After the film's release in Japan in August, distribution agreements for international screenings are expected. For Madoka Magica fans, this summer will definitely be unforgettable.
