New Trailer Released for MAO Anime Part 2: Theme Songs and Release Date Announced

The MAO anime, created by one of the legendary names of the anime world, Rumiko Takahashi (Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2), is returning with new details that will excite fans. The series' official website has shared a special promotional video prepared for the second part (2nd cour), which will begin in July. This new video reveals the deepening mysteries of the story and introduces the new opening and ending songs that will accompany the series for the first time.
In the second half of the series, the opening song will be "Bokura ga Uwagaki suru Sekai" (The World We Write Over), performed by 20th Century (former V6 members). This collaboration holds special significance for fans who love nostalgia, as the group's members performed the unforgettable opening song "Change the World" for the Inuyasha anime exactly 26 years ago. The new ending song, "Tayutau," will be performed by the famous voice actress Reina Ueda, who brings the character Yurako to life in the series. Ueda stated that while recording the song, she tried to reflect the world of an onmyoji in the shadows and the emotional depth of her character.
Produced by Sunrise studio and directed by Teruo Sato, MAO follows Nanoka Kiba, who lives in the modern age and is mysteriously transported to Japan's Taisho era. Here, she meets Mao, a mysterious onmyoji who has lived for 900 years and is cursed by a cat demon named Byoki, and discovers that she is not as ordinary as she seems. In the second part, industry giants such as Rie Kugimiya (Natsuno) and Katsuyuki Konishi (Daigo) will join the story with new characters.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this adaptation is that with the anime adaptation of MAO, all of Rumiko Takahashi's major works serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine have now been adapted into anime. The manga, which has been ongoing since 2019 and reached 29 volumes as of June 2026, is seen as a production where Takahashi showcases her mastery of the dark fantasy genre. The second part of MAO, which will begin with the 14th episode, will meet viewers on July 4, 2026.
