Pen to Wappa to Jijitsukon Gets Anime Adaptation: The Extraordinary Marriage of a Detective and a Silent Girl Heads to the Screen

One of the most interesting duos in the manga world, the story of a 40-year-old detective and a silent high school student, is coming to television screens! It has been officially announced that the Pen to Wappa to Jijitsukon (A Pen, Handcuffs, and a Common-Law Marriage) series, written by Shinichi Sawaragi and illustrated by Gasuyama Tank, will be adapted into a television anime. This exciting announcement, made on April 17, 2026, was crowned with a special promotional video (PV) prepared for the series' fans.
The series follows the unusual partnership between Eiji Kirisame, a 40-year-old detective who is extremely dedicated to his job but somewhat socially distant, and Tsugumi Kuchinashi, a high school student who never speaks and communicates only through her drawings. Meeting at a crime scene, this duo joins forces to solve cases while finding themselves in an unexpected "common-law marriage." Tsugumi's sharp observational skills and Eiji's experience not only shed light on crimes but also lay the foundation for a sweet and funny bond that develops despite the age gap between them.
The manga, which began serialization in Hakusensha's Young Animal magazine in December 2022, quickly achieved great success, reaching a circulation of over 400,000 copies. The series, which reached 6 volumes as of October 2025, was also licensed in English by Yen Press. Sharing a celebratory illustration with the announcement, illustrator Gasuyama Tank expressed their happiness about the characters' transition to the anime world. It is already a matter of curiosity how the project, announced by King Amusement Creative, will reflect the manga's unique visual language and atmosphere.
This adaptation aims to bring a fresh breath of air to genre enthusiasts by blending the "age-gap" and "detective" themes that have gained popularity in recent years. Although it has not yet been announced which studio will produce the anime or its exact release date, the first promotional video provides clues about the tone of the series. If you enjoy both following mysterious events and watching slow-burn emotional bonds between characters, Pen to Wappa to Jijitsukon should definitely be on your list!
