According to Anime News Network as part of Anime NYC 2026, Psyren, by Toshiaki Iwashiro, is finally getting an anime adaptation after 15 years. The series, which ran in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 2007 to 2010, achieved cult status especially after its finale, and has long been cited by fans as a title they hoped would be adapted into an anime.
Psyren left its mark with a story woven with supernatural powers and mysterious cards. High school student Ageha Yoshina finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world thanks to a card he finds in a payphone; there, he is drawn into a survival struggle set against the backdrop of psychic abilities like telepathy and telekinesis. Over its 16-volume run, the series earned a special place in the hearts of Shonen Jump readers with its character-driven narrative and surprise-filled plot.
In Anime News Network's assessment, it was emphasized that the only question mark regarding the adaptation so far is the production quality: "If there's any concern about the adaptation so far, it's on the production side." This comment is causing fans, who have encountered inconsistent animation quality in recent remakes of older series, to take a cautious approach. The studio, director, and voice cast have not yet been announced; this uncertainty also heightens curiosity about the project.
