Studio KAI, the Studio Behind Uma Musume and Fuuto PI, Is on the Verge of Bankruptcy: 565 Million Yen Loss Reported

Studio KAI, which has produced beloved titles in the anime world, is going through a very difficult financial period. The company announced a net loss of 565 million yen (approximately 3.5 million dollars) for the fiscal year ending in December 2025. This massive deficit has caused the studio's equity to fall into the negative, meaning it has technically reached a state of insolvency. These figures, published in Japan's official gazette on April 13, 2026, show that the studio's financial stability has been severely shaken.
Founded in 2019 under ADK Emotions, Studio KAI is a name that achieved great success in a short time. The studio, which reached record-breaking sales figures by taking over the second and third seasons of the Uma Musume: Pretty Derby series, had proven its quality with projects such as Fuuto PI, Super Cub, and the recent standout title 7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life. However, this popularity did not reflect on the studio's financial statements in the same proportion.
Financial reports reveal that the studio has not been able to make a profit since its inception and has reported losses for seven consecutive years. This situation has once again brought the challenges created by the 'production committee' system in the anime industry to the agenda. Even if studios produce high-quality work, the main revenue usually goes to the committee consisting of broadcasters and main investors, while studios that bear the production costs are forced to work with low margins. Nevertheless, the fact that Studio KAI has a giant parent company like ADK Emotions behind it keeps the possibility on the table that the studio could be saved through a capital increase instead of shutting down completely.
So, what awaits the fans? The fate of projects such as the already announced Sentenced to Be a Hero (Yuusha Kei ni Shosu) Season 2 and Snowball Earth, planned for 2026, is a matter of curiosity. Industry analysts predict that the studio may continue to be supported by its parent company due to its more than 130 employees and the strong brands it holds. However, this financial picture may lead the studio to follow a more cautious path in its future projects or result in some productions being transferred to other studios.
