Studio Pierrot's Legendary Magical Girl Series Returns: The First Episodes of Magical Sisters LuluttoLilly Are Now Streaming!

Studio Pierrot, one of the most established studios in the anime world, seems determined to revive its legacy in the magical girl (Mahou Shoujo) genre. Bandai Namco Filmworks has shared the first two episodes of the studio's newest project, Magical Sisters LuluttoLilly (Mahou no Shimai LuluttoLilly), with global audiences via its official YouTube channel, complete with English subtitle options. Premiering in Japan on April 5, 2026, the series has managed to excite both long-time fans seeking nostalgia and new followers of the genre.
This new production holds critical importance in anime history. Magical Sisters LuluttoLilly is the sixth installment in the famous "Pierrot Magical Girl Series," which began in the 1980s with Magical Angel Creamy Mami and last bid farewell to audiences in 1998 with Fancy Lala, arriving exactly 28 years later. The studio's return to this genre after such a long hiatus has caused a major stir in the industry. With Shintaro Doge in the director's chair, the series blends the genre's classic aesthetic with modern animation techniques through its character designs and vibrant color palette.
The story centers on Fuu and Rui Nonoyama, two sisters who have been growing apart. One day, after encountering a mysterious spaceship, the sisters are chosen by cat-like spirits named Uguisu and Azuki, granting them magical powers. Thanks to these powers, Fuu (CompatoLilly) and Rui (MashuLulu) can transform into adult idols, stepping into the world of show business while remaining unaware of each other's secrets. However, this miracle comes with a double-edged rule: their powers will only last for one year, and they must not tell anyone they are magical girls. Penned by Yuko Kakihara, the series offers dramatic depth through this secrecy and time constraint.
The series is also quite ambitious musically, with the opening theme "Bubee" performed by the popular music group ILLIT. The ending theme, "Calling," is performed by the unit LuluttoLilly, formed by the lead voice actresses May Tachibana and Nao Ojika themselves. Bandai Namco Filmworks' decision to make the episodes available on international platforms immediately after their Japanese premiere serves as proof of how quickly the anime industry now responds to its global audience. This modern interpretation of the magical girl genre is expected to be discussed even more within the community in the coming weeks.
