A New Move from Kyoto Animation: "The Credits Roll Into the Sea" Hits Theaters in 2027!

Kyoto Animation (KyoAni), one of the most prestigious studios in the anime world, has made a major announcement that has thrilled fans. John Tarachine's highly acclaimed and award-winning manga Umi ga Hashiru Endroll (The Credits Roll Into the Sea) is being adapted into an anime film by the studio. The film, scheduled for release in 2027, will be directed by the master filmmaker Taichi Ishidate, known for emotionally deep works such as Violet Evergarden and Beyond the Boundary.
The story centers on 65-year-old Umiko Chino, who has recently lost her husband. After meeting film student Kai at a cinema she visits years later, Umiko realizes how much she loves not just watching films, but observing the impact they have on audiences. This moving drama, which conveys the message that it is never too late to do something, continues as Umiko enrolls in a film school filled with students decades younger than her. This intergenerational friendship between Umiko and Kai highlights the healing and unifying power of cinema.
The original manga achieved great success in Japan, ranking first in the women's readers category of the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2022 list. Furthermore, the series, which was nominated twice for the prestigious Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, has reached over 1.3 million copies sold worldwide. KyoAni's choice of this project is of great importance as it will combine the studio's visually stunning style with this mature and character-driven story. In his statement, director Taichi Ishidate noted that audiences will feel the pride and effort behind the creative process to their very core.
