Legendary Gundam Figure Yoshikazu Yasuhiko Talks About Venus Wars and Artificial Intelligence

Mobile Suit Gundam series' legendary character designer and director Yoshikazu Yasuhiko made striking statements about both his past and the future of the industry in a recent interview. Speaking about the 1989 cult science fiction film Venus Wars, the master creator admitted that his perspective on this work, which he had kept at a distance for many years, has softened. Yasuhiko surprised his fans with a self-critique after watching the film again after a long hiatus, saying, "I actually felt it wasn't that bad."
Venus Wars was a project that Yasuhiko adapted to the big screen from his own manga and directed himself. However, its failure to achieve the expected success at the box office during its initial release in 1989 caused the artist to step away from the director's chair for a long time and shift his focus to manga. Today, the film is considered one of the rarest examples of high-quality animation craftsmanship from the late 80s. Yasuhiko noted that the interest shown by modern audiences in the film helped him break his perception of this "failure" from his past.
One of the most remarkable parts of the interview was his views on artificial intelligence (AI) art, one of today's most controversial topics. Yoshikazu Yasuhiko maintains a cautious stance against the rise of artificial intelligence in the art world. Arguing that art should be fed by human experience and emotions, the master designer emphasized that while technology can be used as a tool, it can never imitate the soul of an artist and that unique touch in their brushstrokes. These statements carry great importance, especially in a period where digitalization and automation are increasing in the anime industry.
Touching on his future plans, the 77-year-old artist showed that he has no intention of retiring yet. Following the 2022 release of the highly successful Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island film, he gave the good news that he continues to work on new projects. Although details are currently being kept secret, Yasuhiko's passion for telling new stories in both the manga and animation worlds has created great excitement among his fans. It seems that this giant of the Gundam universe will continue to blend classic aesthetics with a modern vision.
