2026 Eisner Award Nominees Announced: Hirayasumi and Land Make Their Mark on the List!

The 2026 nominees for the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, considered the most prestigious honor in the comic book world, have been announced. According to the announcement made on May 14, 2026, the Japanese manga world continues to have a strong presence on the lists this year. In particular, works by names such as Keigo Shinzo and Kazumi Yamashita are drawing attention with their nominations in various categories. A total of 9 different manga nominations prove once again how deep the industry's influence in the North American market has become.
The most talked-about name this year is Keigo Shinzo, who earned nominations with two different works. The artist's popular slice-of-life series Hirayasumi (volumes 4-7) and the sci-fi comedy Tokyo Alien Bros. (volumes 1-3) will compete in the "Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia" category. While Hirayasumi tells the story of the peaceful life of a 29-year-old living in a house inherited in Tokyo, Tokyo Alien Bros. recounts the funny adventures of two alien brothers sent to colonize Earth. Shinzo's sincere drawing style and character-focused narrative have managed to receive full marks from Western critics.
Another significant success came from Kazumi Yamashita. The artist's Land series, which tells the story of a mysterious village where it is mandatory to die at the age of 50, brought both a "Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia" nomination and a "Best Writer/Artist" nomination for Yamashita. Land, which previously won the prestigious Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in Japan, is considered one of the strongest nominees this year with its deep philosophical themes.
