Yellow Tanabe's Kai-hen Wizards Manga Returns on July 29
Kai-hen Wizards fans, great news! Yellow Tanabe's fantasy manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump will resume its regular publication on July 29. According to statements from the magazine and official channels, the series went on an indefinite hiatus on February 9, 2026 due to the author's health condition. After about five and a half months, Kai-hen Wizards will return, inviting readers back to its magical realms with new chapters.
Tanabe launched Kai-hen Wizards in Weekly Shonen Jump in January 2024, and it quickly attracted attention for its magic system and character depth. The story follows the adventures of two main characters who secretly learn magic in a kingdom where wizardry is forbidden. The mangaka previously reached millions of readers worldwide with Kekkaishi (2004-2011), which was highly acclaimed in both manga and anime adaptations. After Kekkaishi, Tanabe published Birdmen from 2019 to 2021, and now continues his third long-running series in Jump with Kai-hen Wizards.
During the hiatus, fans were anxious, as Yellow Tanabe's health had previously caused short interruptions in his series. Fortunately, the author stated in a brief message on his social media account, "I had the chance to rest; I can't wait to return to the drawing desk." As of July 29, new chapters are scheduled to be published in the 35th issue of Weekly Shonen Jump. Additionally, to mark the series' first anniversary, the first tankōbon volume is expected to hit shelves in the coming months.
This return is even more significant given the recent rapid endings of many new series in Jump. The hiatus doesn't seem to have affected the popularity of Kai-hen Wizards; the series is frequently mentioned in fan forums and social media. The journey of the mangaka to emerge from the shadow of his previous legendary work Kekkaishi and find his own identity will continue alongside the magic battles of Takuan and Sheryl.
