A Delicious Beginning from Kamakura's Young Lady: 'Kamakura Wakaokami Bonkatsu Nikki' Starts Serialization

A new culinary journey begins for lovers of Japanese cuisine and historical atmosphere. “Kamakura Wakaokami Bonkatsu Nikki” (鎌倉若女将ぼん活日記) by Nika Yoshida started serialization with the June 19 issue of Weekly Manga Goraku, published on June 5, 2025. This new gourmet series focuses on the daily life and passion for food of a young lady (wakaokami) running a traditional inn in Kamakura.
The term “bonkatsu” in the manga's title is derived from a Japanese phrase meaning “bon appétit” used when eating. In the series, our protagonist follows her desires and enjoys all kinds of food—from appearance to taste, presentation to tradition—with great pleasure. The story, set against the backdrop of Kamakura's historical landscapes, temples, and coastal areas, promises readers both a visual feast and a gastronomic discovery.
Author Nika Yoshida is known for previous works such as “Kyou mo Hitoyoru” and “Shiawase no Katachi”. Yoshida, who particularly focuses on the small joys of daily life and food culture, this time combines Kamakura's symbolic locations and traditional Japanese inn culture. Weekly Manga Goraku is a seinen magazine targeting an adult male readership; it has previously hosted popular series like “One Outs” and “The Fable”. Gourmet manga is a growing genre in the Japanese comic world, and “Kamakura Wakaokami Bonkatsu Nikki” brings fresh energy to this trend.
The first chapter appeared in the magazine's June 19 issue, while the release schedule for subsequent chapters has not been announced yet. However, based on the pace of Yoshida's previous works, a regular monthly or biweekly period can be expected. Combining Kamakura's historical texture, inn culture, and a passionate culinary journey, this manga is a must-read beginning for fans of flavor-focused works like “Yakunara Mug Cup mo” or “Shokugeki no Soma”. We eagerly await which Kamakura specialties the protagonist will discover in future chapters.
