A New 'Different Class' Romantic Comedy on Gangan Online: 'As Kamijou-kun Desires'

Square Enix's popular manga platform Gangan Online welcomed a brand new series on June 14 in its app version: 'As Kamijou-kun Desires' (Original title: 上城くんのお望みのまま). This 'different class' romantic comedy by mangaka Fuyutani Riku tells the story of a conditional engagement between a high school girl crushed under debt and her wealthy classmate who is an heir.
At the center of the story is a female student going through hard times due to her family's accumulated debts. One day, Kamijou-kun, the richest and most mysterious student at school, makes her an unexpected offer: “If you enter a conditional engagement with me, I'll pay off your debts.” Behind this offer lies Kamijou's own plans. In this relationship that begins without trust, a 'kakusa love comedy' (different class romantic comedy) awaits us, making us wonder whether real feelings will eventually blossom.
Although there is not a large body of previous works by Fuyutani Riku, she has managed to attract the attention of Gangan Online readers with her new series. The platform, which has hosted major hits like 'Kusuriya no Hitorigoto' and 'The Devil Is a Part-Timer!', has a vast library appealing to readers of all ages. The 'different class' theme has become a frequently explored genre in Japanese romantic comedy manga in recent years; popular series such as 'Kaguya-sama: Love Is War' and 'My Dress-Up Darling' can be cited as examples of this trend.
The first chapter of the series, released only through the app so far, has received positive reactions from readers. The same chapter is expected to be published soon on the web version of Gangan Online. Whether new chapters will be released at regular intervals or weekly has not been officially announced yet, but past Gangan Online series have generally been updated weekly or biweekly. 'As Kamijou-kun Desires' stands out as a must-follow series especially for readers who enjoy tropes like 'forced engagement' and 'debt-for-agreement'.
