Ameku Takao's Detective Karte Manga Ends: 3rd Volume is the End of the Road

It has been officially announced that the manga The Killer Angel Within: Ameku Takao's Detective Karte (Ameku Takao no Suiri Karte: Sphere no Shitenshi), serialized in Kodansha's Good! Afternoon magazine, is coming to an end. This series, illustrated by the renowned mangaka Eri Takenashi, will conclude with its third compiled volume, which will hit shelves on July 7. This short but impressive adaptation, which began in September 2024, brought one of the darkest and most intriguing arcs of the series to readers.
The series is based on a popular novel series written by Mikito Chinen, who is also an internal medicine specialist in real life. The story revolves around Takao Ameku, a genius but socially awkward doctor who deals with "undiagnosable" cases at Tenikai General Hospital. Takao Ameku uses his medical knowledge not only to diagnose illnesses but also to shed light on mysterious deaths and medical crimes that even the police cannot solve. The novel series has achieved great success in Japan, selling over 3 million copies to date.
This manga adaptation is not the only visual representation of the Ameku Takao universe. Looking at the history of the series, we see another 4-volume manga adaptation illustrated by Hiroki Ohara between 2016 and 2018. Furthermore, the series inspired an anime titled Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective, produced by the Project No. 9 studio in January 2025, and a live-action drama that aired in April 2025. Its appearance in so many different formats demonstrates how strong a foundation the character and the story have.
