April 13 Manga Bulletin: 3 New Series Starting from Horror Romance to Cat-Souled Villainesses

It is a very busy day for manga lovers! As of April 13, the first volumes of three new series in different genres have met readers in Japan. Published under the labels of giants like Kodansha, Shonen Gahosha, and Akita Shoten, these works both bring a fresh breath to classic themes and attract attention with their unusual plots. If you want to make room for a new story in your library, you should definitely take a look at this list.
One of the most notable releases of the day is Koi ni Niteru to Omotta no (I Thought It Was Like Love) by Satsuki Kageyama. Serialized on Kodansha's digital platform Comic Days, this work is described as a rare 'horror-romance' blend. The story follows the chilling reunion of a woman whose life is turned upside down when her partner, who was thought to be dead, returns as a completely different creature. Kageyama succeeds in walking the reader on that thin line between love and horror in this first volume.
For fans of fantasy and reincarnation, Konyakusha-sama ni wa Unmei no Heroine ga Arawaremasu ga, Zantei Konyaku Life o Mankitsu Shimasu! (My Fiancé's Fated Heroine Will Appear, But I Will Enjoy My Temporary Engagement Life!), brought to life with illustrations by Ryoku Miyajima, has taken its place on the shelves. Adapted from Usagi Hoshimi's popular novel, this manga puts a very sweet twist on the 'villainess' theme: our protagonist was an adorable cat in her previous life! Even though she knows that the true heroine will one day arrive and take her fiancé away, our cat-souled protagonist is determined to spend this process as enjoyably and freely as possible.
We haven't forgotten those who love historical dramas and palace intrigue. Shiran Koukyuu Senninden, illustrated by Mie Washio and based on Sora Ishida's novel, brings the time-travel theme to a Chinese-inspired palace atmosphere. Telling the story of a young girl transported to a harem (houkyuu) 100 years in the past, her efforts to restore history, and the bond she forms with a lonely prince during this time, the series offers a great alternative for genre enthusiasts in this period where works like The Apothecary Diaries have become popular.
These three new releases also highlight the 'hybrid genre' trend in the manga industry in recent years. Instead of just pure romance or pure action, love stories blended with horror or absurd but fun sub-genres like cat reincarnation are receiving more attention. Especially with publishers like Shonen Gahosha and Akita Shoten investing in such niche stories, the diversity of the fan base is increasing. We will see together in the coming months whether the popularity of these series will grow and if they will receive an anime adaptation.
