Box Garden Beetle Manga Nominated for Best Collection at Ignatz Awards

Akino Kondoh's short story collection Box Garden Beetle has found a place in the recently announced Ignatz Awards nomination list in the Best Collection category. The collection, published in Japan by Seirinkogeisha in 2004, met English readers under the Glacier Bay Books label in May. Kondoh, a manga artist and animator, contributes to the international visibility of alternative Japanese manga with this nomination.

The Ignatz Awards are given annually to honor the work of independent comics and small publishers as part of the Small Press Expo (SPX) held in Maryland, USA. The award takes its name from the Ignatz Mouse character in George Herriman's classic comic strip Krazy Kat. Winners are determined by votes from SPX participants, which makes the award an important platform for experimental and artistic works outside the mainstream comics industry.

Kondoh is widely known for her picture book Poupelle of Chimney Town, which was adapted into an anime film in 2020. Box Garden Beetle, known in Japanese as Hakoniwa no Mushi, brings together stories from the artist's earlier period. Seirinkogeisha, which handled the collection's first edition in Japan, is a long-established publisher known for the alternative manga magazine AX. In this context, the nomination strengthens Kondoh's position in both independent manga and animation.

Glacier Bay Books has drawn attention as an independent publisher that has been bringing Japanese alternative manga into English in recent years. The English edition of Box Garden Beetle is an important step in bringing such works to international readers. Winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held at SPX. The nomination also creates an opportunity for the collection to be discovered by a wider readership.
