A New Psychological Drama from the Creator of Boy's Abyss: "Sangeki" Meets Readers

Ryo Minenami, the renowned mangaka who made a global impact with the Boy's Abyss (Shounen no Abyss) series, has returned with a new project after a hiatus of approximately one year. The first chapter of Sangeki (山劇), published in the 18th issue of Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump magazine (April 2, 2026), is poised to drag readers once again into an emotional and psychological impasse. The series' title is also interpreted as "Mountain Theater," playing on the Japanese word sangeki, which means "tragedy."
The new series centers on an intense story of love and hate unfolding in a desolate mountain atmosphere. From the very first chapter, the tense atmosphere and the inner turmoil of the characters—the hallmarks of Ryo Minenami—are palpable. While the author describes the series as "a tragedy that turns into a comedy or a catastrophe," the phrase "What we call an ideal is a curse; what we call hatred is salvation" found in the promotional bulletins provides significant clues about the tone of the story. It has also been announced that the series will be published simultaneously worldwide via Manga Plus.
Ryo Minenami achieved great success with Boy's Abyss, which was serialized between 2020 and 2024 and concluded in 18 volumes. That series, which dealt with suicide, despair, and toxic relationships, sold over 1 million copies and was adapted into a live-action series. Although the author's career includes works in different tones such as Himegoto: Juukyuusai no Seifuku and Hatsukoi Zombie, with Sangeki, it is clear that the author has made a definitive return to the "dark drama" genre he knows best.
For manga fans who enjoy stories with high psychological depth, Sangeki is considered one of the most remarkable debuts of 2026. Minenami's mastery of character analysis and his narrative style, which manages to be both unsettling and intriguing, suggest that this new series will be talked about for a long time. We will see together in the coming chapters what tragedies will come to light in the mysterious silence of the mountain.
