The Dan Doon Universe Expands: New Spin-off Manga Saga Doon Begins Serialization

An exciting development has occurred for historical manga enthusiasts! Saga Doon: Eto Shinpei to Hizen no Yokai (Saga Doon: Eto Shinpei and the Yokai of Hizen), a new spin-off manga that expands the world of Miko Yasu's highly acclaimed series Dan Doon, officially began in the 24th issue of Kodansha's weekly Morning magazine on May 14, 2026. This new series approaches the era of the main story from a different perspective, focusing on the hidden heroes of Japan's modernization process.
Saga Doon centers on events taking place in the Saga Domain (Hizen) during the late Edo period (Bakumatsu). The story features real and compelling figures from Japanese history, Eto Shinpei and Oki Takato, in the lead roles. Known by the nickname "The Monsters (Yokai) of Hizen," this duo struggles to modernize the Saga Domain and shape the future of the country amidst the political turmoil of the era. The series is particularly intriguing in how it will handle Eto Shinpei's process of laying the foundations of the Japanese legal system and the path leading to the subsequent tragic Saga Rebellion.
The series creator Miko Yasu is a highly respected name in the manga world. Known for Hakozume: Koban Joshi no Gyakushu (Police in a Pod), which was previously written and achieved great success, even being adapted into an anime, Yasu turned her focus to history with Dan Doon, which she began in 2023. While Dan Doon covers the life of Kawaji Toshiyoshi, who is considered the founder of the Japanese police force, Saga Doon expands this universe by shifting the focus from the Satsuma region to the Saga region. Yasu's unique sense of humor and meticulous historical research make this new series
