Gabriel Dropout Manga is Ending: Time to Say Goodbye
Our beloved lazy angel Gabriel Dropout is preparing for its final chapter. According to Anime News Network, the manga written and illustrated by Ukami will end in the next issue (Dengeki Daioh December issue, to be published in November 2024). The series first appeared in the same magazine in 2013. So we have reached the end of an 11-year journey.
So what is Gabriel Dropout? The story follows Gabriel Tenma White, an angel sent from heaven to Earth, who suddenly becomes lazy and addicted to an MMO as she gets used to life on Earth. The hilarious moments she spends with her demon friend Vignette April Tsukinose, half-demon half-angel Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell, and another angel Raphiel Ainsworth Shiraha became the core element that made the series popular. Ukami's sense of humor combined with the exaggerated personalities of the characters resulted in a cult work.
The ending of the manga means the closing of an era. The series received an anime adaptation by Doga Kobo in 2017 and became an internet phenomenon, especially with Gabriel's lazy antics. Although the anime was limited to 12 episodes and an OVA, manga fans had been waiting for a second season for a long time. Unfortunately, with the manga ending, that possibility seems even slimmer.
However, it is likely that Ukami will set sail for new projects. The end of Gabriel Dropout also means saying goodbye to one of the most beloved examples of the genre. A total of 16 tankōbon volumes of the series have been published, and the final volume will likely be on shelves in early 2025. If you haven't read it yet, this weekend is a great opportunity for a marathon.
