Gakuen Sensuikan-tai: Mermaid Girls Manga Ends: Final Volume Arrives in June

For manga readers who love sci-fi and military themes, an era has come to an end. The manga Gakuen Sensuikan-tai: Mermaid Girls (School Submarine Fleet: Mermaid Girls), written by Makoto Fukami and illustrated by Seigo Tokiya, has officially concluded. It has been announced that the fourth and final compiled volume of the series, which began its journey in Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan magazine, will be published on June 25, 2026.
The series invited its readers into a quite dark and immersive dystopia. Set in a world where mysterious alien entities called "Trench Walkers" emerged from Antarctica and raised the sea level by exactly 70 meters, the story focused on the submersion of many major cities, including Tokyo. In this universe, where seawater has turned into a deadly substance called "Nectar" (Nectar of the Gods), only young girls capable of adapting to this substance join submarine fleets to fight on the last front of humanity. This adventure, which began with our main character Hiro Todoroki joining the Masakado Girls' Academy Submarine Unit in hopes of finding her missing older sister, drew attention with its action-packed scenes.
The creative team behind this series consists of names quite familiar to the manga world. Writer Makoto Fukami is a master of military strategy and building dark atmospheres, known especially for his screenwriting work on the Psycho-Pass series and Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka (Mahou Shoujo Tokushuusen Asuka). Illustrator Seigo Tokiya continued his synergy with Fukami in this series, successfully conveying the claustrophobic and tense atmosphere of submarine warfare to the reader. As in the duo's previous works, the contrast between "cute character designs and harsh military reality" was at the forefront in this series as well.
Coming after a publication life of approximately two years, this finale shows that the story was concluded in a planned manner. With its four-volume structure, Gakuen Sensuikan-tai: Mermaid Girls remains an accessible work for new readers and an easy collection for collectors, securing its place on shelves for genre enthusiasts. With the final volume arriving in June, fans have already begun to curiously await which world the duo of Fukami and Tokiya will build in their next project.
