The First Volume of Shojo Macbeth Is Out: Unveiling the Curtain on a Mysterious Death on the Theater Stage

The new manga series Shojo Macbeth (Girl Macbeth), which brings together mystery and theater enthusiasts, hit the shelves in Japan with its first volume as of April 9. Written by the famous crime author Ten Furuta and illustrated by Umami Saurus, the series lifts the veil of secrecy behind a tragic death at a prestigious theater school. The story goes beyond being just a school mystery, blending the ambitious and competitive world of performing arts with a dark atmosphere.
The plot of the manga takes place at the Hyakka Theater School, which trains the stars of the future. Ryo Shitara, the school's shining star and a genius playwright seen as a "god" by those around him, tragically falls from the stage and loses his life while a play he directed is being performed. Although this event is recorded as an unfortunate accident, a year later, Takami Fujishiro, a new student at the school, changes everything with a bold statement made in front of the entire school: "I have come to find the truth behind Ryo Shitara's death." As our protagonist Sayaka Yuki gets involved in Takami's dangerous quest, they find themselves in a spiral of betrayal and crime reminiscent of Shakespeare's Macbeth tragedy.
The names behind the series are already proof of the project's quality. The author of the original story, Ten Furuta, is a recipient of the Edogawa Rampo Prize, one of Japan's most prestigious crime fiction awards, as well as the Mystery Writers of Japan Award. Furuta's storytelling talent is combined with the elegant and impressive lines of Umami Saurus, known for the illustrations of The Case Files of Jeweler Richard manga. Serialized on Kodansha's digital platform Comic DAYS, the manga has quickly managed to become one of the most notable works on the platform.
Shojo Macbeth has created great excitement among fans of the genre, especially with its character depth and the way it reflects the psychological weight of the performing arts. The mysterious atmosphere established in the first volume invites readers into a detective story where every character is a potential suspect. If you like works about the world of stage performance such as Act-Age or Oshi no Ko, but are looking for a more intense crime fiction plot, this series should definitely be on your list. How the themes of the Macbeth play will overlap with real-life events in the later chapters of the story is already a matter of great curiosity.
