A New Sports Series from Gohoubi: Sumo-Themed "Kakuriki" Begins on April 13!

Gohoubi, one of the beloved names in the manga world, is returning with a new project that will surprise fans. According to the official announcement in the 19th issue of Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine, the artist's new series Kakuriki will meet readers on April 13. This new work centers on the traditional Japanese sport of sumo, inviting readers into the dusty and disciplined world of the ring.
Kakuriki follows the story of Daigo Senzen, a former top-tier sumo wrestler. Miraculously waking up after a three-year-long coma, Daigo is determined not to give up despite physical obstacles and the fact that he is now 32 years old. The character's determined struggle to return to the ring to realize his dream of reaching the highest rank, Yokozuna, will form the main focus of the series.
This series represents a significant stylistic shift for Gohoubi. The artist was previously known for the globally acclaimed romantic comedy series I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend Into a Girl (Koisuru (Otome) no Tsukurikata). Having proven their mastery of emotional depth and character development, how the artist will handle the harsh, physical, and competitive atmosphere of sumo has become a subject of great curiosity among fans.
Sumo-themed manga have always held a special place among genre enthusiasts with successful examples like Hinomaru Sumo. However, due to its protagonist's age and the severe health issues he has faced, Kakuriki promises to offer a more mature and dramatic perspective, moving away from classic "young prodigy" stories. In addition to the technical details of the sport, this work, which will also highlight an athlete's psychological resilience, appears to be a candidate for one of the most notable manga releases of the spring season.
