The GTO Legend Returns in Full Force: Lead Actress Announced for Takashi Sorimachi's New Series!

One of the most iconic characters in Japanese television history, Eikichi Onizuka, is returning to the screen for a full-length series once again after 28 years. Takashi Sorimachi, the star of the legendary 1998 GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) series, will take the lead role in the new project set to begin in the summer of 2026. The highly anticipated female lead of the series has been announced as popular model and actress Meru Nukumi (Meruru). Nukumi will bring to life the character of Mio Kashiwabara, who will serve as an assistant teacher in Onizuka's class.
The new series was announced following the success of the GTO Revival special, which aired in April 2024 and made a significant impact. The story will follow the adventures of Onizuka, now in his 50s, at Seishin Academy, a school that has become digitized where everything is managed via tablets. Mio Kashiwabara, played by Meru Nukumi, will serve as a direct contrast to Onizuka's unconventional and chaotic methods as a rational, efficient, and conflict-avoidant classical literature teacher. Sharing her excitement about the role, Nukumi stated, "When I watched the series in my youth, I used to dream of being a student; I never imagined I would return in the role of a teacher."
This new production is not just a nostalgia project; key figures such as the original 1998 series screenwriter Kazuhiko Yukawa and director Satoru Nakajima are also returning to the project. Based on Tohru Fujisawa's legendary manga, which has sold over 50 million copies worldwide, the series will address the issues of the modern "Reiwa" era, such as bullying, social media addiction, and teacher evaluation systems, through Onizuka's "old-school" but sincere methods. The original series reached a 35.7% rating with its 1998 finale.
