The Master of Horror Manga Junji Ito Celebrates His 40th Anniversary: A Tribute to the Master from Akutami and Fujimoto

Junji Ito, the first name that comes to mind when one thinks of horror manga, is celebrating his 40th major milestone in his artistic career. The May issue of Da Vinci magazine, which hit shelves on April 6, prepared a special dossier that serves as a massive tribute to the master artist's career. This special issue features contributions from some of the most popular names in the modern manga world, including Jujutsu Kaisen creator Gege Akutami and the genius behind Chainsaw Man, Tatsuki Fujimoto, who saluted Ito's indelible impact on the industry with special illustrations and essays.
Junji Ito's professional journey began in 1987 with Tomie, which was published in Monthly Halloween magazine and won an honorable mention at the legendary Kazuo Umezu Awards. A former dental technician, Ito has since redefined the genres of body horror and cosmic terror with works such as Uzumaki, Gyo, and The Enigma of Amigara Fault. The artist's detailed drawing style and stories that delve into the dark corridors of human psychology have made him an icon not only in Japan but worldwide, earning him numerous Eisner Awards and the Inkpot Award in 2023.
One of the most exciting aspects of this celebration for fans has been hearing directly from the next generation of mangaka about the influence of Ito's legacy on their work. It is well known that Gege Akutami makes explicit references to Ito in certain scenes of Jujutsu Kaisen (particularly the Uzumaki technique used by Kenjaku). Tatsuki Fujimoto is considered one of the most important figures who blends Ito's bizarre and unsettling atmosphere with modern storytelling. The magazine also features contributions from prestigious artists like Tsuchika Nishimura, proving once again the strong bond between the past and the future of the horror genre.
The 40th-anniversary celebrations are not limited to the pages of a magazine. The Setagaya Literary Museum in Tokyo is preparing to host a major solo exhibition titled "Junji Ito Exhibition: Enchantment," which will open its doors at the end of April. This exhibition will bring the artist's original drawings, handwritten drafts, and career milestones to his fans. The events organized for this living legend of the horror genre show that Junji Ito's dark world will continue to inspire new generations of artists for many years to come.
