The Independent Game Hungry Lamb, Which Captivates with Its Dark Atmosphere, Steps into the World of Manga

One of the most remarkable productions in the independent gaming world in recent years, Hungry Lamb: A Traveling Salesman in the Late Ming Dynasty (Hungry Lamb: Shidai de Yang), is meeting its fans with an official manga adaptation. The series, which published its first chapter in the August issue of KADOKAWA's popular magazine Monthly Comp Ace on June 26, brings the game's dark and tragic atmosphere to paper. While Daregashi handles the illustrations for the manga, the creator of the original game, Ji Ling (嵇零), serves as the supervisor for the project.
The original game was released on Steam in April 2024 and achieved great success in a short time, receiving "Overwhelmingly Positive" reviews. Having sold over 1 million copies as of March 2025, the production proved the storytelling success of the Chinese independent studio Zerocreation. Set during the famine and civil unrest of the late Ming Dynasty between 1628 and 1632, the story explores themes of survival, redemption, and revenge. The popularity of the game caught the attention of one of Japan's most established publishers, KADOKAWA, paving the way for this manga project.
The plot of the manga revolves around Liang, a bandit who makes his living through human trafficking and theft. Liang embarks on a dangerous journey to take four young girls to a wealthy master in the city of Luoyang. However, one of these girls, a nine-year-old mute named Sui, reveals the horrific truth behind the journey: the master at their destination is actually a "Pig Demon" who feeds on children every year. Sui asks Liang to abandon this mission and help her take revenge for her sister. Blending historical realism with dark fantasy, the work invites readers on a journey filled with moral dilemmas.
This adaptation is considered an important indicator that Chinese-origin independent games are finding more and more space in the Japanese manga and anime industry. Beyond being just a game adaptation, Hungry Lamb also appeals to history enthusiasts by meticulously handling elements such as clothing, architecture, and social structure during the Ming Dynasty. Following the success of the series, the development team continued to expand the universe by releasing the sequel, The Weeping Swan: Ten Days of the City's Fall, in April 2026. Whether the manga series will follow one of the nine different endings offered by the game or add new details is already a subject of great curiosity among fans.
